Fabijan Skroza
Fabijan Skroza is a Sydney based painter whose practice centres on portraiture and the quiet observation of character. Working primarily in oil, his paintings focus on the subtle presence of the subject, whether human or animal, capturing the small details of posture, expression, and atmosphere that reveal individuality.
With over two decades of painting experience, Skroza approaches portraiture as both a technical discipline and a personal study. His work draws on the long tradition of classical portrait painting while maintaining a contemporary sensitivity to composition and mood. Rather than pursuing spectacle, his paintings are built through careful observation, allowing personality to emerge through restrained colour, soft light, and deliberate brushwork.
Skroza’s work explores the relationship between subject and viewer, often inviting a slower kind of looking. Each painting is intended to feel intimate and reflective, encouraging viewers to engage with the quiet emotional presence of the figure.
Based in Sydney, Skroza produces original paintings, limited edition prints, and bespoke commissioned portraits. His work is held in private collections and continues to evolve through ongoing series that explore portraiture across different subjects and scales.
Fabijan Skroza
Portraiture has always been the subject that draws me back to painting. There is something endlessly compelling about the human face and the way small shifts in expression can communicate entire emotional worlds. When I paint, I am interested in those quiet moments where character reveals itself without effort.
My work is built slowly through observation. I spend time studying the way light moves across a face, how posture changes the feeling of a figure, or how an animal holds itself within a space. These small details often carry more truth than dramatic gestures. Through painting I try to capture that sense of presence.
While much of my work is grounded in traditional oil painting techniques, the intention is not nostalgia. Instead, I see portraiture as a way of continuing a long conversation between artist, subject, and viewer.
Whether painting people or animals, I approach each work as a study of individuality. Every subject carries its own personality and energy. My role is simply to observe closely enough that something honest begins to appear on the canvas.
